Angel Maxine, the only openly transgender artist and LGBTQ+ activist in Ghana, has lamented the police's lack of interest in LGBTQ+ issues in the country.
Angel Maxine claims that the Ghana Police Service frequently ignores security concerns impacting the LGBTQ community.
Following a string of assaults on some members of the gay community in Ghana, Angel Maxine made some remarks on the subject, claiming that the police paid no attention to them.
Angel Maxine bemoaned the situation in a lengthy video that she posted on Instagram and claimed that gay people in Ghana deserved the same protection as everyone else in the nation.
"Ghana Police, may I ask, are LGBTQ+ people not citizens of Ghana? Were we not born in Ghana? Why do you think that when LGBTQ+ issues arise, no one notices, no one cares, and everyone turns a blind eye to them? Why?” In the video, she questioned.
"Queer people have been attacked and brutally abused so many times, but nobody ever pays attention to it," she continued. Is it as a result of our queerness? Set aside our LGBT identity and consider whether we are not Ghanaians. Do we not belong to Ghana?
The "Wo Fie" singer also discussed her interactions with the police, saying that lesbians and gay men feel "frustrated" when the police ask them "why are you gay" instead of paying attention when they report crimes.
The Police, according to Angel, are "unfair to gay people," and this is why gay people are attacked daily because the Police won't intervene when they are being abused.
As a result, she urged that they be safeguarded in the same manner as all other Ghanaians.
We're not pleading with you; we're here to demand protection. Because we are Ghanaians, we demand it. Your responsibility is to look out for us and not conspire against us, she continued.
