Apple Music is delving deeply into the growth of Amapiano and the female leaders of the genre that is taking the world by storm.
From the late 2010s, Mzansi's street and youth culture has been exemplified by the bass-heavy, jazz-punctuated dance subgenre known as Amapiano (literally, "the pianos"). In the typically male-dominated field of dance music, it has also given women a place to flourish and shaped the sounds and styles of their burgeoning careers.
These artists include the DJ and producer Uncle Waffles, who was born in Eswatini, the singer-songwriter Nkosazana Daughter, who was born in Kwa-Zulu Natal, and the DJ and producer DBN Gogo, who will be featured on Apple Music in 2022 as part of the Isgubhu series. These musicians are responsible for some of the most well-known songs in the genre and for introducing Amapiano to the rest of the world.
It feels absolutely fantastic to travel the world and share this genre. "Piano should be present everywhere." - Waffles Uncle
"I want to heal people, and I want them to feel a certain way every time they listen to my music." - Daughter of Nkosazana
"It is an honor and a blessing for me to represent South Africa and the distinctive amapiano sound. I'm grateful for the chance to promote amapiano around the world because I want people to dance and enjoy the music. DBN Gogo.
