Rema, a superstar of African music, has joined Spotify's Billions Club.
Since its release in August 2022, "Calm Down," his smash song with Selena Gomez, has wowed audiences on the dance floor and everywhere. It has also been streamed numerous times.
This accomplishment is the first time a Spotify tune featuring African artists has amassed a billion streams. Being among the top 10 Afrobeats musicians on the platform, Rema is a deserving champion.
It's a good thing. It's a significant victory for the culture as well as for me, my team, and my family, said Rema. "I feel incredibly thrilled, and I'm really proud of the fans for keeping the song alive and introducing it to new listeners. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, especially the DJs.
According to Spotify data, "Calm Down" is being streamed most frequently in the United States, India, Mexico, Brazil, and the United Kingdom, demonstrating that the song is really international in scope. Additionally, it has been included in over a million Spotify playlists.
This significant achievement for Rema is a turning point for both as an artist and for the whole Afrobeats scene. We are thrilled to continue promoting the genre at Spotify since it is obvious that it is having a big impact and gaining a lot of sway on the international music scene, according to Victor Okpala, Spotify's Artist and Label Partnerships Manager for West Africa.
