She was found guilty by the Accra High Court of conducting an illegal mining enterprise, aiding and abetting illegal mining activities, and illegally hiring foreign workers. She also entered Ghana while forbidden from returning, to which she entered a guilty plea.
Aisha Huang denied the allegations, but the court found inconsistencies in her defense claims made during the course of the trial, which lasted a year. Aisha's attorney, Miracle Attachey, cited her time in custody since October 2022 in favor of a fine and deportation rather than a jail term. But taking into account the effects of Aisha's activities on impacted communities, Director of Public Prosecutions Yvonne Atokora Obuobisa urged for a maximum jail term and deportation.
Allegations of participation in illicit mining, or galamsey, in the Ashanti Region are the basis for Aisha Huang's case. She was first deported in 2018, but upon her return to Ghana, she was prosecuted for both old and new offenses. As part of a plea bargain with the State, the guilty plea for unlawful re-entry was entered.
