At auction, a black velvet evening dress, fit for a ballerina, that belonged to the late Princess Diana of Wales set a record by selling for a whooping $1,143,000, eleven times its estimated value.
The dress broke a new fashion record as the most expensive frock ever sold at auction when it was sold for $1,148,080 (£904,262) at Julien's Auctions in Hollywood.
The gown was originally offered for $100,000 to $200,000 and was sold in 19 bids. At least two formal events were attended by the then-Princess of Wales in the blue and black star-spangled dress, created by Moroccan-British designer Jacques Azagury. The first was a banquet hosted by the Mayor of Florence in April 1985, which she wore while traveling with then-Prince Charles in Italy.
The next year, Diana wore the dress once more, this time to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's concert at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, Canada.
Prior to this, the most costly garment ever worn by the late Princess of Wales and auctioned off was a velvet gown designed by Victor Edelstein in 1991 that brought $604,800 (£476,437) in January.
