The head of the New Force and a prominent businessman from Ghana, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has hinted recently at his bold ambition to invest in sports by buying Manchester United or Chelsea FC without the public knowing.
Cheddar stated that he wants to purchase either Chelsea FC or Manchester United to demonstrate that an African can be powerful. Cheddar hopes to run as an independent in Ghana's 2024 presidential election.
Speaking about football in Ghana on Nhyira FM, Nana Kwame Bediako claimed that his goal is to establish a robust African Champions League, similar to what exists in Europe, rather than just purchasing a major English team.
As I sit here, I want to raise enough money to either buy Manchester United or Chelsea at the expense of the general public, proving to the white guy that black men can be powerful as well. Like in Europe, I would like to invest in and create an African Champions League.
He emphasized, "Let's build strong leagues in Africa so that we can sell our players to Europe outright instead of smuggling players for peanuts through dubious means."
The well-known businessman went on to stress how important it is for Ghana to utilize its past football stars, particularly when it comes to negotiating favorable terms for player transfers outside.
The head of the New Force claims that Ghana has failed in this regard, which strikes him as odd. I visited the late Papa Arko's house a few days ago. He is one of my heroes, along with Opoku Nti and other football players who were huge stars when I was a young child.
"We did not make sure that these outstanding football players became legendary because, in today's environment, the guys I listed would have become major league agents with extensive global networks. Many of them wind up broke after their playing career because we are not a serious nation, he said.
