After returning from Germany in June 2021, Joyce, who had earlier denied being HIV-positive, underwent a public HIV test to allay any concerns. She was shocked to learn that the test was positive.
The actress-turned-musician acknowledged that she had considered suicide as a result of the harsh public criticism and taunts related to her HIV status in an open interview with Efie Ne Fie of Onua FM. She continued to admit that she had originally intended to commit herself following the public test, but that changed after receiving help from a person in Germany.
When Joyce looked back on her darkest days, she revealed, "I took that test intending to kill myself after, but I changed my mind after receiving help from Germany." I was merely using my social media presence to leave suicide notes behind, but I received assistance.
The former AIDS ambassador went on to say that the person who contacted her stressed the value of her motherhood and urged her to think about how her passing would affect her kids.
The individual told her, "Even though I don't love myself, I have children who need me, and I should consider what they will go through when I die."
